Bern sits squarely on the map of Swiss expressways. The A1 connects the city with Basel and Zürich to the north, with Lac Léman and Geneva to the south, and via Lausanne with the Valais. The A6 to the Berner Oberland runs just east of the city. Downtown pedestrian-only zones make parking in city garages a virtual necessity; electric signs on major incoming roads post current numbers of available spaces.
