Fodor's Review

More than a decade in the making, Santiago's vast City of Culture, a controversial striated-stone-and-glass edifice on Mt. Gaiás, was meant to whisk Galician culture into the future, though it falls short, and indeed construction was stopped in 2013 due to delays and overexpenditures. A scaled-down version has since opened with a museum, an archive library, and temporary cultural exhibitions. The museum has a variety of temporary shows—for example, an exhibit of Spanish art about the the Camino de Santiago. The cultural center has frequent concerts, talks, and performances. The design of the complex, by the American architect Peter Eisenman, is based on the shape of a scallop shell, the emblem of St. James, and the five medieval caminos that lead pilgrims to Santiago's Cathedral.
