This budget-friendly pension in the beautiful seaside village of Elantxobe is a great outpost for exploring the picturesque fishing towns hiding along the rugged Basque coastline. Basic and cheery accommodations come with a café-bar and are within close proximity to some of the best beaches, hiking, surfing, kayaking, and diving in the Basque Country.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The owners, while extremely friendly, don’t speak any English.
12 rooms of the pension are simple and clean and feature wood floors and home-style furnishings. They are equipped with flat screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.
Some of the rooms feature small balconies that overlook the ocean and we highly recommend them both for the gorgeous views and for the extra natural light that livens up the room.
Each room comes with its own private bathroom. They are well sized with white tile walls and nice brick tile floors and come with an assortment of basic toiletries and a hairdryer.
The cozy reception area is basic but livened up by the exposed stone of the original foundations and the timber beams on the ceiling above. There’s a homey nook of a lounge area with antique furniture on the ground floor.
A diminutive but charming café with a menu of Basque dishes makes for a nice place to hang out or have lunch between activities but for a proper meal we’d recommend venturing down to the harbor or to one of the great restaurants in the neighboring towns.
On the ground floor is a small bar where the hotel staff double as the bartenders. Though the area may not match what comes to mind when you think of hotel lobby bar, it is fully stocked with whatever libations your heart and liver may be craving.
The town of Elantxobe, while close to Bilbao as the crow flies, is along the notoriously rugged coast with steep mountains and winding roads that requires a car to access. The pension kindly offers free parking once arrived. The nearby sights like Laga Beach, the Urdaibai nature preserve, and the resort town of Lekeitio can be accessed easily by car.
At Playa de Laga is a wonderful beachside restaurant, Toki Alai (8-minute drive), that provides pleasant views of the ocean and a tasteful interior dining space with a tasty menu of fresh locally sourced Basque dishes. Closer to the hotel, down in the harbor of Elantxobe with views of the sea is Miren Jesús Cortázar Uriarte (5-minute walk). It is an upscale fine-dining establishment with fantastic seafood.
Just up the main road and overlooking the harbor of Elantxobe below is Mentrame Taberna (8-minute walk), a quaint local pub with great pintxos and an outdoor terrace for drinking on a nice day.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The lodgings are basic but Itsamin Ostatua is a warm and welcoming home base for travelers wanting to get away from the crowds and explore the spectacular beauty of the Vizcaya coastal region at an affordable price. Elantxobe itself is a romantic little village and the phenomenal outdoor activities nearby are attractive for nature-lovers or just anyone looking to relax on one of the many beautiful beaches nearby.
