Gran Derby Suite Hotel

Carrer Loreto 28, Barcelona, Catalonia 08029, Spain

This British-inspired boutique is an all-suite hotel that is high on luxury, style, and design. Quiet and proper, you get the sense of walking through a museum as you make your way past black & white checked floors to the uniquely decorated guest rooms. There is art everywhere including original pieces from renowned masters like Picasso and Miró. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, this classic spot has everything you could ask for including a gym, pool, and top-level service.

Rooms are all different but generally break down into two themes – African and Asian. With a mix of modern and classic art, guests will find paintings by Spanish artists along with hardwood or tiled floors, area rugs, zebra prints, and antiques. All rooms come with a welcome bottle of wine and free bottled water.

The hotel is incredibly pet friendly and dog packages include beds, toys, and special snacks. The set includes buffet breakfast for you and costs 140 Euros (per night).

Bathrooms are the peekaboo variety, but if you’re shy, you can close some blinds. There’s a mix of showers and shower/tub combos while the junior suite has a Jacuzzi. Bath products are by the White Company.

Black and white floors sit beneath arched brick ceilings that immediately take you into an English sensibility. There’s a smattering of lounge furniture and a computer desk for printing out boarding passes.

The small rectangular pool is surrounded by a few black and gray loungers and apartment complexes that encircle the property. Open year-round from 10 am to 8 pm, guests can tan away while ordering food and drinks from a room service menu.

There’s no spa on the property but you can order an array of in-room massages.

A miniscule gym has a couple of Salter cardio machines and free weights atop hardwood floors. There’s also a sauna that’s available 24/7.

The breakfast room serves a standard buffet with lots of hot and cold items like fresh pastries, meats, cheeses, and more. Across the street, but part of the hotel is The Times coffee shop, a healthy option with reasonably priced set menus.

Also across the street is the Epsom bar, a very British-feeling spot for scotch and cocktail lovers open from 5 pm to 1 am.

Getting Around

This area of Barcelona is a bit removed from the typical tourist spots. With that said, it’s still easy to get around as there’s a tram just north of the hotel and a metro to the east. Walking around this area reveals a bunch of local hangouts for restaurants and shops.

Head across the street to the Meliá Barcelona Sarrià where inside is Cheeso (2-minute walk) a restaurant and bar with an outrageously good cheese plate. For something a little different, try Shibui (5-minute walk) for excellent Japanese cuisine.

Make it a point to go across the street to Epsom Bar (1-minute walk) if you like aged scotch and mixed drinks. Fans of vermouth and drinking outdoors should head to El Vermut Vell (4-minute walk).

This hotel is really quite stunning as museum-level art can be found in every corner of the property. Rooms here are spacious and meticulously designed as you’ll discover zebra patterns, antique Asian furniture and different styles in each. One downside is the location as it’s not a central hotel and getting to the main parts of the city can take a minute. But there is public transit not too far away, so don’t let this concern sway you from staying. Service is where they really shine as the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and will make your time in Barcelona valuable. And don’t forget about the bottle of wine in the room.
