Banys Orientals

Argenteria 37, Barcelona, Catalonia 08003, Spain

As you wind your way through the narrow alleys of the Born neighborhood, you’ll come across one of the original hotels that first put this area on the map. Banys Orientals is a family run and charming property that takes the simple concept of a Fonda (traditional Spanish inn) and modernizes it to fit today’s standards. With a great location, a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, and a personalized level of service, this boutique hotel will make you feel like home amidst the chaos of the rest of the city.

All rooms in the hotel are pretty much the same. You’ll find black wood floors and black canopied bed posts with tiny TVs mounted on the walls. Every room comes with a balcony and you’ll find a free pair of flip-flops that you can use for the beach (about 10-minutes away).

Every floor has a refrigerator filled with free bottles of water. Help yourself!

Black-tiled bathrooms all have shower/tub combos and raised sinks. If you need/want a bidet, ask ahead as there are limited rooms available. Ritual bath products are standard.

Black-and-white-checked floors lead guests to the reception desk where they’ll find an old photo of swimmers at the beach – an ode to the hotel’s namesake. There’s not much else here, however.

The crown gem of the hotel is the restaurant, Senyor Parellada, a Michelin Bib Gourmand spot that specializes in Catalan cuisine. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, this classic spot has been preparing paella since 1983 (before the hotel), and sits under a chic blue glass atrium that helps mix it’s classic lines with modern art (priceless BTW) hung throughout the property.

Getting Around

The hotel is only a 4-minute walk from the Jaume I metro stop, which is also along Via Laietana, one of the main thoroughfares in the city. Getting around this neighborhood by foot is the way to go as exploring Born’s endless alleys is a treat as you’ll come upon ancient sites, dozens of restaurants and bars, and authentic shops and boutiques.

For something a little cozy and intimate, check out ESTIMAR (3-minute walk) for the best seafood of your life. For unbeatable tapas, head to master chef Jordi Cruz’s Ten’s (7-minute walk) for Michelin level, yet casual dining.

There are so many great bars in this area that it’s hard to narrow down. Check out Paradiso (7-minute walk), a speakeasy with classic cocktails or El Xampanyet (4-minute walk) for an old school vibe with great beers.

Being in Born has all the charm you’ll ever need, but this O.G. hotel that helped carve the neighborhood into what it is today takes that charm up a notch. The rooms are simple and there’s no spa or gym or pool, but that’s not why you come here. You come because it’s a family run property where they’ll help you personalize your experience and feed you in their stellar restaurant in a way that would make your grandmother proud.
