Fodor's Review

The Scottish home of the dukes of Sutherland is flamboyant Dunrobin Castle, an ancient seat developed by the first duke into a 19th-century white-turreted behemoth. As well as lavish interiors, there are summer falconry demonstrations and Versailles-inspired gardens. Trains so fascinated the duke that he built his own railroad in the park and staffed it with his servants. The first duke has a controversial legacy; he was responsible for the brutal Sutherland Clearances of 1810 to 1820, when people were removed from their farms to make room for sheep to graze.
