Fodor's Expert Review The Torridon

Off A896, Shieldaig, Highland, IV22 2EY, Scotland

The Victorian Gothic turrets of this former hunting lodge promise atmosphere and grandeur—and with its log fires, handsome plasterwork ceilings, mounted stag heads, and antique mahogany furniture, The Torridon doesn't disappoint. Gourmet dinners (from three to seven courses) include locally sourced seafood, beef, lamb, and game, and the cellar has an impressive selection of fine wines. Take a stroll around the kitchen garden; an idyllic spot and source of the fruits, vegetables, and herbs used for dinner. The activities here range from sea kayaking to gorge scrambling to clay pigeon shooting, and many are included in the room rate, but book in advance to avoid disappointment. If you can, choose master room two—it's not the most expensive room here, but it's the best.
