Fodor's Expert Review Roman Camp

Off Main Street, Callander, Stirling, FK17 8BG, Scotland Fodor's Choice

Within a hundred yards of Callander's main street, on the other side of an unpretentious arch, is this 17th-century hunting lodge hidden among ornate gardens. The drawing room and exquisite library recall the hotel's origins, and the rooms are furnished with the past and present in mind; comfortable and elegant, they have large and modern bathrooms. There is a lovely walled garden and a riverside arbor as well as the River Teith flowing past (and guests enjoy fishing rights). The well-regarded, formal restaurant is elegant, serving expensive lunches and dinners. Less expensive is the newly opened Potting Shed Café Bistro in what was actually a former potting shed.

PROS

  • beautiful grounds
  • luxurious rooms
  • close to everything in town

CONS

  • restaurant is expensive
  • no Internet in rooms
  • much sought after for weddings, so could be busy
