Fodor's Expert Review Pitlochry Hydro Hotel

A924, Pitlochry, Perth and Kinross, PH16 5LY, Scotland

A grand hotel in the best Victorian style, the Pitlochry Hydro is a 19th-century vision of a medieval castle on 50 acres with views of hills and valleys. It was built in the 1870s, when the popularity of spas and water treatments was at its height. Suites on the fourth floor, in the pointed towers, have circular sitting rooms with lovely views (though it is quite a climb to reach them). The bedrooms are luxurious; most have grand curtained beds and reproduction antique furniture. Bathrooms are spacious and unique. In the basement, a genuinely interesting museum (£3) looks at the hotel's history. The elegant restaurant offers prix-fixe and à la carte menus; you can also choose to include dinner in your room rate. There are gardens and woods to walk in, and a range of activities if you prefer not to lounge on the ample leather sofas in the lobby.
