Gretna Green

The first town across the English–Scottish border, Gretna Green (not to be confused with nearby Gretna) was historically where runaway couples went to be married by the local blacksmith under Scotland's more lenient laws. No one could accuse the town of failing to exploit its reputation as the place to tie the knot. Although it is highly commercialized, it is still a favorite venue for weddings, even though the original reasons for going have long since changed.
