Fodor's Expert Review Cringletie House

Edinburgh Rd., Peebles, The Scottish Borders, EH45 8PL, Scotland

With medieval-style turrets and crow-step gables, this small-scale, peaceful retreat manages to be fancy and homey, Victorian (it was built in the 1860s) and modern (flat-screen TVs). The surrounding lawns and trees provide the feeling of a grand country house. Some of the individually decorated bedrooms have fireplaces and four-poster beds, and all overlook the 28-acre grounds. From the drawing room, there are views over the valley. A walled garden grows produce used in the bright and elegant restaurant, which draws locals thanks to its Scottish fare. There is also golf and fishing nearby.
