The Principal

19-21 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PB, Scotland

Jennifer Rigby

A historic hotel on elegant George Street, the Principal Edinburgh is a stately old building brought bang up to date by the Principal Hotels Company mini-chain. From the colonnade front to the kilted staff in the lobby, the tasteful colors of the hotel that are inspired by 19th-century Scottish landscape painters to the welcome G&T, the hotel has proper old-school hospitality down, and a real sense of occasion. There are some cute touches, like a tuck box in the rooms.

room

Rooms are luxurious and comfortable, with kingsize beds and fresh milk in the fridges for tea and coffee. Tones are muted, and themed on the painters mentioned above: think highland glens and mountain heathers.

bathroom

Bathrooms have large oak mirrors and white brick-like tiles, with Elemis toiletries and rainfall showers. Only suites have baths.

lobby

The lobby, with columns and shiny tiled floors, continues the stylish, vintage-y hotel feel, with a comfortable lounge area and pleasant lighting. Staff are obliging and professional.

gym

There's a newly equipped gym.

dining

Burr & Co is a well-frequented coffee shop housed within the hotel. Its restaurant, The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen, nods to Edinburgh's literary heritage and serves well-cooked modern British food in an elegant setting.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Guests have reported a patchy experience at breakfast - sometimes long queues and not enough staff.

drinking

The late-night cocktail bar within The Printing Press has good single malts, Edinburgh gin and Scottish vodka.

The hotel also has a pleasant library and the magnificent King's Hall, which is popular for weddings.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The hotel is within easy walking distance of the attractions of New Town and Old Town, from Princes Street to the castle.

Restaurants

Henderson's Salad Table (2-minute walk) is a vegan and vegetarian institution in the city. Or try Dishoom (3-minute walk), the first non-London outpost for the mini-chain inspired by the Irani cafes of Bombay/Mumbai in the early 20th century.

Bars

Bramble Bar and Lounge (4-minute walk) is a hip underground cocktail bar only a couple of minutes' walk away. Or The Black Cat (8-minute walk) is a good pub dishing up Scotch, local beers and Scottish food.

WHY WE LIKE IT

It's been a hotel since 1881, so they've had time to get it right - albeit under different ownership - and it shows. A classy hotel in keeping with Edinburgh's stately vibe.
