Inn on the Mile

82 High Street, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH1 1LL, Scotland

The clue's in the name: this is a genial pub/inn, right on Edinburgh's world-famous Royal Mile. It has nine bright, modern rooms accessed through a semi-secret door in the pub. It's a lively spot in the city center, with well-designed amenities for travelers (iPod docks, plug sockets in the right place - it's amazing how many hotels get this wrong - Dyson hot and cool fans, and the Scotsman newspaper delivered to your room daily).

YOU SHOULD KNOW There are live bands in the pub at night, and the hotel is located on a busy junction. So if you're looking for a peaceful stay and a silent night's sleep, this is not the property for you.

Beds are comfortable, with large, soft headboards and crisp white sheets, and the rooms themselves are a mix of the building's original features (high ceilings, cornicing, sash windows) and modern design. They come with plenty of added extras too, from GHD hair straighteners to Nespresso machines and magazines. The old bank building has no lifts, but staff will take up your bags.

Bathrooms have steam resistant mirrors and White Company toiletries. The standard rooms have rainfall showers, and the superior rooms have bathtubs.

There isn't a lobby as much as a bar in the pub, but staff are cheery and friendly, and eager to help.

The Inn on the Mile has good, reasonably priced, traditional food. Breakfast is not bad, but is not usually included in the room rates.

Try the Isle of Arran haggis for the proper Scottish experience.

The bar is a buzzy spot with good cocktails and beers and blue leather booths.

Getting Around

The prime location for this little hotel means you're unlikely to have to think about public transport much while you're in Edinburgh: most of the main sights are just a short walk away.

Wedgewood The Restaurant (4-minute walk) is an unusual fine-dining blend of Scottish and Asian flavors. Or the relaxed Arcade Bar, Haggis and Whisky House (2-minute walk) has some of the best of the delicacies in its name in town, in an attractive stone-walled setting.

Relaxed writer/reader friendly cafe The Elephant House (7-minute walk), with great views of the castle, is now something of a tourist draw as the location where JK Rowling wrote some of the Harry Potter books. Or try The Jazz Bar (4-minute walk) for some music of an evening.

Straightforward as you like, the Inn on the Mile is a good pub with modern rooms in a great location in central Edinburgh. Staff are friendly and there's a good atmosphere - a great spot for those who like to be at the heart of things.
