Hotel Ceildh-Donia

14-16 Marchhall Crescent, Edinburgh, Midlothian, EH16 5HL, Scotland

Jennifer Rigby

More like a small hotel than a B&B, the Ceilidh-Donia is a welcoming and professional little outfit, now owner-run, close to Arthur's Seat. Some rooms have great views of the former volcano. The location is very quiet, but still easy enough to get into the city center on a bus that takes around 20 minutes.

room

The 17 rooms are spacious and comfortable, although perhaps a little bland. There's some nice flowery wallpaper.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There's no lift, but there's a twin and double on the ground floor for guests with disabilities.

bathroom

Bathrooms are large and well-appointed, with lots of toiletries and good showers.

lobby

The lobby has a quite traditional small hotel feel; red carpet leads you through, like the yellow brick road in Oz. But the staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable and there are leaflets and travel books everywhere, in several different languages.

dining

Breakfast is a good spread although the color scheme of the room - fairly bold red walls with black leather chairs - could be a little confronting early in the day.

drinking

The bar, to the left of the lobby, is cosy, with panelled walls and comfy corners.

There's a nice little BBQ/picnic area at the back of the hotel too.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Parking is available for guests although the owners advise taking the bus into town, which is quick and easy.

Restaurants

Apiary (11-minute walk) offers top-to-tail eating and a nice wee Scottish vibe (we're trying out the lingo). Or Pataka (11-minute walk) is a great local Indian restaurant.

Bars

The Salisbury Arms (6-minute walk) is a nearby modern pub with a beer garden. The White Hart Inn (30-minute walk or 20-minute bus ride, close to the center of town), is a storied pub which claims to be one of the oldest in Edinburgh, complete with ghost stories.

WHY WE LIKE IT

This hotel does what it says on the tin - and that's no criticism. Comfortable, friendly and quiet, with lots of helpful information for visitors and pleasant public spaces, the Ceilidh-Donia is a great little hotel at really affordable prices for its location, just out of the city center.
