Fodor's Expert Review Kew House and Apartments

1 Kew Terr., Edinburgh, Edinburgh, EH12 5JE, Scotland See on Map

With such comfort and professional service on offer, you might think that Kew House was a full-service hotel. Actually, it's an affordable six-room B&B with a small modern apartment adjacent, run by friendly owners Alan and Ian for the last 25 years. The elegant 1860 terraced house has unfussy rooms with little touches like hair dryers, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi. Welcome luxuries include fresh flowers, decadent chocolates, and a decanter of sherry on arrival.

There's a small car park available for guests.

Rooms are spotlessly clean and have more amenities than the usual B&B, such as smart TVs. They aren't dramatically memorable, but they are comfortable and warm, in soothing natural beige and stone tones.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The B&B is on a busy road, but rooms are quiet.

Bathrooms are not huge, but again, very clean and comfortable, with modern amenities and White Company toiletries. All have a shower/bath.

As in most B&Bs, the lobby is more of a friendly welcome from the owners than an actual physical desk or room. Alan and Ian are knowledgeable and informative, armed with maps, transport tips and secret recommendations for the best local haunts.

The breakfast here is absolutely stellar, all local and organic, and indeed has won several awards.

Try the tasty Scottish smoked salmon and eggs.

Guests have access to a lounge at the front of the house.

Getting Around

The hotel is walking distance from Murrayfield, the home of Scottish rugby, and from the center of the city. But for those with weary sightseeing feet, a number of buses go from right outside the B&B, both to the center and the airport in the opposite direction.

Alan and Ian recommend Otro (13-minute walk), a Scottish/Spanish hybrid, and First Coast (14-minute walk), an approachable, affordable local bistro with some forward-thinking food.

The Roseburn Bar (3-minute walk) has been a pub since the 1880s, and still has many of the original fixtures and fittings. Or try the gin at The Jolly Botanist (11-minute walk) near Haymarket station. Don't try them all though - there are 72 on offer.

As the owners put it on our visit: "B&B just means offering a decent bed and a decent breakfast - how do people get it wrong?" Well, at Kew House, they get it more than right, with comfortable rooms, a fantastic breakfast, and a friendly and helpful welcome.
