Fodor's Expert Review Begemot

City Center Bars/Pubs

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

A stone statue of a bulky begemot (hippopotamus) decorates the entrance to this loud bar, but despite the name, it's all about glamour here. The slinkily dressed waitresses are immaculate, the interior design is eclectic (wood-covered ceilings, industrial lamps mixed with crystal chandeliers, large, puffy chairs), the crowd fashionable, the cocktails imaginative, and the wine list commendable—all ingredients that have made the bar a favorite with local yuppies. There's also a library, with low lighting, and a karaoke room. During the day Begemot operates as a restaurant serving decent Continental dishes.
