Vila Real de Santo António

This community on the Guadiana River is the last stop before Spain. Like most border towns, it's a lively place, with lots of bars and restaurants and some traffic-free central streets that encourage evening strolls. If you're interested in a short excursion across the border, visit Ayamonte, the town's Spanish counterpart. Just on the other side of the Guadiana River, Ayamonte can be reached during the day and early evening on a charmingly old-fashioned ferry.
