Fodor's Expert Review Paço dos Duques de Bragança

Guimarães Castle/Palace

This much-maligned 15th-century palace that once belonged to the dukes of Bragança is now the official regional seat of Portugal's president. Critics claim that the restoration during the Salazar regime (1936–59), which turned the building into a state residence, damaged it irrevocably. Certainly the palace's brick chimneys and turrets bear little relation to the original structure, which was an atmospheric ruin for many years. Judge for yourself on an independent or guided tour of the interior, where you'll find much of interest—from tapestries and furniture to porcelain and paintings.
