Largo do Paço is flanked by the well-proportioned Antigo Paço Arquiepiscopal Bracarense, which overlooks a castellated fountain. Parts of the Gothic building date from the 14th century. Today it's occupied by faculty from the city's university and functions as the public library—one of the country's most impressive, with more than 300,000 volumes.
