Fodor's Expert Review Chaxoila
This traditional restaurant 3 km (2 miles) outside Vila Real off the main road to Chaves has been in business for six decades and is extremely popular with locals. Tasty starters here include bacalhau and chickpea salad, and tripas (tripe) dishes unrivaled by nearby venues. Meat-centric mains—most of which may be ordered in half servings—incude grilled lamb, cozido à portuguesa (a meat, sausage, and vegetable stew) and posta maronesa, tender steak from grass-fed regional cattle. This is also a good place to sample regional wines and desserts.
