Fodor's Review

These grand hilltop gardens have indigenous flora as well as plants from all over the world. The Monte Palace was a luxury hotel from 1897 until 1943, but with the death of the last owner, it went out of business and the building and grounds were neglected for more than 40 years. In 1987 millionaire entrepreneur José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo bought the property and transformed it into this garden. Antique statues, windows, niches, and other architectural artifacts dot the grounds, tiled panels recall the adventures of the Portuguese explorers, Asian pagodas and gateways lend touches of the exotic, and cannons pour their salvos of water from a stone galleon in a lake. There is also a small museum packed with precious stones and African carvings. Note the wonderful views down to Funchal, too.
