Fodor's Expert Review Viela d'Alfama

$ Alfama Portuguese

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

At this tiny tasca near the Feira da Ladra flea market, decorated to look like an "Alfama alley," the day's menu consists of a paper tablecloth pinned up outside. What's on offer is simple but tasty: popular local dishes such as bacalhau à brás (codfish sautéed with egg, olives, parsley, and tiny potato fries) or braised pork cutlets seasoned with garlic. The soundtrack here is provided by Rádio Amália, as the owner is a fan of the great diva. On fado nights, most Fridays and Saturdays, they do a great all-in deal: around €25 for nibbles and a main dish, plus a couple of glasses of wine or beer, dessert, coffee, and ginginha (cherry liqueur).
