Fodor's Expert Review Café no Chiado

$$ Chiado and Bairro Alto Café

There are some tasty fish and meat dishes on offer at this sophisticated yet friendly downtown café-restaurant: cod with sautéed chickpeas, cabbage, chouriço, and poached egg is a favorite on the menu, as are mini sirloin steaks with cream sauce, mustard, french fries, and creamed spinach. For dessert, the apple pie with crumble and ice cream is a good bet. The shaded esplanade is a pleasant place to absorb local atmosphere (including the antique trams rumbling past) away from the hustle of Rua Garrett, the area's main shopping drag. The wide selection of Portuguese and international newspapers adds to its laid-back attractions. Open daily from 10 am to 2 am, it's a good option for a late-night bite.
