Fodor's Expert Review Antiga Confeitaria de Belém
For a real taste of Lisbon, stop at the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, a bakery shop–café specializing in pastéis de nata—delicious, warm custard pastries sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Although the sweet treats are ubiquitous in Portugal—most Lisboetas will admit to consuming at least one or two with coffee every day—the version here is the most celebrated. Made from a secret recipe since 1837, the legendary pastéis de Belém are so good that lines snake out of the door of this traditional blue-and-white-tiled establishment, and tourists and locals alike load up on packages to take home.
