Fodor's Review

One of the most well-known places in Almeirim serving sopa da pedra, this place is your typical, large Portuguese restaurant, with noisy family-style seating. Its name means "the oven," but it actually refers to a grill in the center of the open kitchen where all of the hot food is prepared. The sopa da pedra is served in a steaming metal cauldron for two or more people and is perfectly paired with a big hunk of crusty, fresh bread topped with a piece of the local cheese that is served at the beginning of the meal. Wash it all down with a big glass of the local house tinto. If you're still hungry after the soup, try the costeletas de borrego (rustic-style lamb chops) served with rice and french fries, or one of the porco preto (meat from the Iberian black pig) dishes.
