Fodor's Review

About 5 km (3 miles) south of Leiria just off the N1, at the Azóia traffic circle, O Casarão occupies a large country house surrounded by gardens where you may take an apertif before your meal. The service and presentation are flawless without being pretentious, and the extensive menu includes several ancient recipes from nearby monasteries. Try the ensopado de robalo com gambas (sea bass stew with prawns) or, if there are two of you, split the medalhões de noviho no espeta com gambas (steak medallions, barbecued with prawns and bacon), which comes with beans and rice, migas de nabiça (fried bread crumbs and turnip tops) and açorda. There's a play area for children inside the restaurant, as well as free Wi-Fi. Leave room for one of the homemade desserts, such as leite creme.
