The Literary Man Óbidos Hotel

Rua D. João d'Ornelas, Óbidos, Leiria, 2510–074, Portugal

This 19th-century convent-turned-inn-turned-stylish hotel (inaugurated in its current form in 2015), near the main gate, has a bit of a split personality: a quarter of the rooms feature traditional wooden ceilings and floors and iron beds, while the rest are "eco-chic," employing recycled materials with contemporary flair. The former convent's old nuns' cells are now ultracomfortable. In keeping with Óbidos's recent vocation as a literary town, tens of thousands of books line the walls—including in the spacious restaurant (which serves Portuguese, Japanese, and vegetarian cuisine) and trendy gin bar, with its range of "literary cocktails." As well as the existing treatment room for massages, a sauna and steam bath are planned for 2017.
