The Wawel Hill—with the Royal Castle and cathedral—is perched between the south end of the Planty Ring and the Vistula River, which takes a sweeping turn in this very spot. Across the river, to the southwest, is a residential district of Dębniki, now much enlivened by the ICE conference and entertainment center, a venue for all kinds of concerts and performances. Opposite Dębniki and directly west of Wawel is another residential and historical district of Salwator—gateway to the pictursque Kościuszko Mount.
