Fodor's Expert Review Glassdrumman Lodge

85 Mill Rd., Annalong, Co. Down, BT34 4RH, Northern Ireland

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

For those who wish to be pampered as well as immersed in the ancient Kingdom of Mourne, brothers Johnny and Ben Hall's eclectically simple and stylish lodge is the place. "Shabby chic" guest rooms are decorated in creamy-blue colors, and have large windows with glorious views. The outside of the house is less than spectacular, but the busy estate has more than enough drama to compensate, since the family members grow their own crops, raise their own farm animals, and bake their own bread. Among the diversions for guests is the cookery school, offering half-day courses in seafood, traditional Irish cooking, and French cuisine. The restaurant serves Irish dishes with a Mediterranean flair.

PROS

  • stunning location in the heart of the mountains with the sea on your doorstep
  • rooms well appointed with pleasant en suite bathrooms

CONS

  • some say the restaurant is overrated
  • pity they've stopped churning their own butter
