Fodor's Expert Review Haarlemmerpoort

Western Islands Building/Architectural Site

This Neoclassical gateway was built in 1840 as an excise post to replace one of the five former city gates, which had to be demolished. It has been variously used as a police station, fire station, and public works office; in 1986 it was restored and converted into apartments. It's a useful landmark to find your way to the Westerpark.
