Room Mate Aitana

IJDock 6, Amsterdam, North Holland 1013 MM, The Netherlands

A sculptural steel and glass structure perched on the IJdok, a man-made island in the IJ river, houses the Amsterdam offspring of the Spanish Room Mate chain, which combines a unique location with international allure, stunning views, and friendly service. It may seem like an unlikely place to reconnect with the old soul of Amsterdam, but the river bustling with barges, boats and cruise ships, reminds one of the city’s beginnings when the harbor played a crucial role in its development as a trade city.

YOU SHOULD KNOW At the time of our visit, the direct walkway between Amsterdam Centraal Station and the IJdock was still under construction. But, even without it, it’s an easy walk from the station.

Each of the 12 floors has a different color scheme. Well-designed (if a tad generic) and spacious (the average room is 322 ft2), standard double rooms are brightly hued, with modern chairs and desks, and queen size beds come with color-blocked headboards. All rooms feature floor to ceiling windows, which means that if you book a room with a view, you truly get one! Amenities include 52-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars (some stocked with Iberico ham!), cupboards with ironing boards and a laptop safe, and in-room instant coffee/tea making facilities (suites have Krups coffee makers).

A room with a view costs only €15 more than a standard double. For €80 more, a Junior Suite with a corner view is well worth it. The hotel is also ideal for families: There are 9 sets of connecting rooms and 20 family-friendly rooms.

Sparkling white bathrooms come with roomy rain showers (some also have a bath) and the widest range of amenities we’ve seen in the city: from nail polish remover, body scrub and sanitary pads to shaving- and dental kits, Room Mate Aitana’s got you covered.

Contemporary art, including ceiling-high bronze lighting sculptures and a sickle-shaped caramel leather couch, fills the soaring lobby, where you can help yourself to free water and catch your breath before retiring to your room.

Ask about the Wimate device, which lets you enjoy free Wi-Fi throughout the city, when you check in.

The basement gym is small but well-equipped, with nice marina views.

For an extra charge, a buffet breakfast is served until noon at I-Dock restaurant. For lunch, there are Mediterranean small bites or an internationally-inspired dinner. Weather permitting, you can enjoy it all on the sizeable outdoor terrace floating in the marina.

Bring the kids! For every main course ordered at I-Dock, one of the under-12s at the table gets a free plate of food from the kids’ menu (think pasta with meatballs, veggies with dip or crispy chicken with risotto).

Aitana Loungebar is located on the mezzanine level, which offers views of the City Marina IJDock and a Delftware-inspired wall. Choose from over 50 bottled beers, including many from local craft breweries, 10 types of gin and tonics, or wines and cocktails.

Getting Around

Out of the hustle and bustle but close enough to it, this is arguably the safest part of Amsterdam–you’re right next to the Waterpolitie (“water police”) station and the Palace of Justice (the city courthouse) and Public Prosecution Service (OM)–with their round-the-clock surveillance, and you can walk to Westerdok, Westerpark and the Jordaan in minutes. You also have good access to public transport: the nearby NDSM-ferry will take you to the hippest part of Noord, and at Centraal Station, a short walk away, you can hop on the city-wide public transport network. Alternatively, park your car at the next-door parking garage (from €10 per day, pre-booked), or bring your boat and moor it at adjacent City Marina IJDock (€3 per meter, per night, excl. electricity).

For fine dining on IJdok, you needn’t look further than Michelin-starred Mos (1-minute walk), where you’ll find creative dishes in a chic setting with fabulous vistas of the river. Another one of Amsterdam’s most consistently praised dining experiences, Wolf Atelier (4-minute walk) is situated on top of an old industrial railway bridge with 360-degree views nearby. For Gallic classics in a more casual setting, try Bistrot Neuf (13-minute walk).

Old-style Café Papeneiland (11-minute walk), which has been run by the same family for nearly four centuries, is a great place to grab a casual beer (or some of the city’s best apple pie). If it’s fermented grapes you’re after, wine bar Stuyvesant Wijnlokaal (12-minute walk) located in the historic Het West-Indisch Huis, is your best bet.

Overlooking of the IJ River, the City Marina IJDock, and Amsterdam’s iconic rooftops, at Room Mate Aitana, it’s all about the views.
