Fodor's Expert Review Morgan & Mees

Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 2-6, Amsterdam, North Holland 1052 LC, The Netherlands

This cozy and contemporary boutique inn is perfect for guests seeking a charming environment away from the hustle and bustle of touristy Centrum but still within walking distance of the sights.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Be prepared to climb lots of stairs, as there's no elevator.

room

Sleek guestrooms feature light-colored walls and a neutral color palette rich in texture and pattern: think stripy woven area rugs, herringbone wood floors, and geometric cushions. Some rooms are split-level and boast beamed ceilings; all have Coco-Mat beds, air-conditioning, and flat-screen smart TVs.

bathroom

The monochromatic theme continues in the handsome white tiled bathrooms, which are accented with black hardware, white marble vanities, roomy rain showers (most don’t have tubs).

Grab as many of the luxurious black pepper-scented bathroom products by beloved local brand Marie-Stella-Maris as you can carry.

lobby

There’s no lobby, just a striking black-and-white entranceway, but the hip bar and restaurant are where it’s at anyway.

dining

The eponymous (and, judging by the crowds, rather popular) restaurant offers international crowd-pleasers such as tuna tataki, curried lentil soup, and steak frites, while the spacious terrace allows for some prime people-watching over a glass or two of wine.

drinking

With its hip yet homey interior in natural colors and materials, this is a bars guests will want to hang out in.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Located in hip West, near the picturesque Jordaan district, UNESCO World Heritage Canals and trendy 9 Streets Shopping District, you have good access on foot to many sights from here. And, with various tram stops nearby, you can easily zip all over the city.

Restaurants

If it’s casual comfort food you’re after, La Perla Pizzeria (9-minute walk), is famed for its authentic wood-burning oven Pizza Margherita, and convivial vibe. Or expand your pancake horizons at Japanese Pancake World (10-minute walk), which serves 3 styles of savory okonomiyaki. For thoughtful fine-dining in a simple neo-bistro setting, try Breda (15-minute walk), one of the city’s most respected non-Michelin star restaurants.

Bars

Café ‘t Smalle (10-minute walk) has been around since the 18th-century when it was the Hoppe Distillery, and its canal-side terrace is one of the prettiest places to grab a casual beer. Bar Oldenhof (12-minute walk) offers a wide range of whiskeys and reasonably-priced cocktails (by Amsterdam standards, that is) in a bar with a nouveau gentlemen’s club vibe.

WHY WE LIKE IT

With its charming décor and cozy vibe, this hotel is a great option in the hip West district.
