Why We Like It

Movenpick Hotel Amsterdam City Centre is ideally situated for access to the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, and walking distance from Centraal Station.

Fodor's Expert Review

Built on an island within the docks area on the IJ River, it’s all about the views here, and many of the businesslike rooms in this glass skyscraper look out over the Amsterdam skyline and beyond. Culture vultures can make the most of classical and jazz concerts at the neighboring Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ complex, while NEMO science center, a must-see for kids, is within walking distance. The hotel is Green Globe certified for its sustainability policy, which extends to organic coffee, eco-friendly linens, and economic use of water and electricity.

You Should Know The location is not as remote as it might seem: a complimentary shuttle connects the hotel with Centraal Station (book in advance!), and you’re a relatively a short walk from the center, but it’s a lonely, windy walk along the open water.

Room

Standard rooms are bland and businesslike, but at 279 f2 fairly roomy for Amsterdam, with free WiFi access, flat-screen TVs with movie- and satellite channels, and sustainable climate control. There are sizable work desks with ergonomic chairs and adjustable lamps. King size beds with fair trade linens are comfortable and you’ll sleep very well due to black-out curtains and practically sound-proof rooms. Complimentary tea and coffee making facilities (bigger rooms have Nespresso machines) come standard.

Tip Many upper floor rooms offer panoramic views of the IJ-river, North and the Old Center (room 1930 is particularly good) and they’re worth it! There are also connecting rooms for families or you can pay a little extra for a sofa bed for a third person.

Bathroom

Contemporary and comfortable, with large vanities, proper hairdryers, and magnifying mirrors. Some rooms have walk-in showers while others feature a bathtub with adjustable shower head. All rooms have eco label-certified bathroom amenities.

Lobby

Large but not particularly inviting for lingering.

Pool

No.

Spa

Yes, you can book a massage at the hotel’s Lifestyle Studio, or choose between a traditional Finnish sauna and bio sauna (both are unisex), and there is a “shower landscape” with hot and cold showers, ice fountain and relaxation area.

Gym

Yes, there is a gym with TechnoGym cardio- and kinesis equipment.

Dining

Silk Road restaurant offers IJ-river views and an all-day international menu. A buffet breakfast (not included) can also be enjoyed there, but there are better options in the center.

Tip Or order room service: the cheeseburger is pretty good!

Drinking

Wind down with a whiskey (they have a handsome selection!) at Silk Road bar, or choose from a wide range of other drinks.

What's Nearby

Restaurants

While the three-story pagoda-style Sea Palace (10-minute walk) seems like a typical tourist trap, it’s actually a great place to grab dim sum and Peking duck. Or, if you’re inclined to fine dining, there’s &moshik (11-minute walk), a 2-Michelin star eatery with awesome Oosterdok views and globally-inspired gastronomy. For casual, contemporary fare and a great all-German wine menu in a frill-free setting in Marineterrein, a historical naval dockyard, head to Scheepskameel (12-minute walk).

Bars

For some super casual drinking in a hippie-like waterfront setting, there’s Hanneke’s Boom (6-minute walk). Or for well-crafted cocktails with a view, head to the award-winning terrace of SkyLounge at the DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station (10-minute walk).
