Fodor's Expert Review Max Brown Hotel

Herengracht 13-19, Amsterdam, North Holland 1015 BA, The Netherlands

At this urban hotel, spread across three historic houses with lovely views onto the Herengracht, the check-in desk is a long bar, where you can also order cofffee or cocktails. It immediately sets the tone of the place—casual, hip, and quirky—where you can go and explore the prettiest part of town, which is right on your doorstep, or stay in and hang out with other guests (or the chatty staff).

YOU SHOULD KNOW If you want a full-service hotel, or an elevator, look elsewhere, as there's no restaurant, no gym, no minibars, no turn-down service, and only steep stairs to reach the rooms.

room

Rooms have a clean yet homely look and vintage flair with reclaimed wood walls, mustard yellow rotary dial phones, distressed rugs and patchwork bedspreads, though they're generally small. Rooms also have pink Domo kettles and pastel-colored enamel mugs. The basketball net on the wall and ball-shaped cushion are a fun touch.

Some rooms offer gorgeous canal views. Others have the added advantage of their own entrance, so you feel like you’re living in a canal house like a local.

bathroom

Small but perfectly formed. The white metro tiled bathrooms look clean and inviting, and have gorgeous Dead Clean bathroom products with Dead Sea minerals and natural plant oils. Some rooms contain wet rooms where the shower is not enclosed, though you can request a (pricier) room with a separate shower.

lobby

The small lobby invites lounging, with brown leather couches, velvet chairs, a fireplace, and a small library of art books and games.

dining

There’s no restaurant, though a complimentary albeit basic breakfast is served in the small breakfast room.

Look out for typical Dutch breakfast items, such as "beschuit"(flat rusks), "ontbijtkoek" (spiced rye cake) and "pindakaas" (salted Dutch peanut butter).

drinking

At the bar in the book-lined lobby, you’ll find a fully stocked (coffee) bar, with a selection of cocktails, such as the “Dutch Cucumber” with Dutch gin, lemon and cucumber. It’s a good place to hang out and chat with friendly bartenders and other guests.

gardens

There is a small outside terrace for guests to use.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Sitting on Herengracht, near the Brouwersgracht, you’re pretty much in the prettiest part of town. But when you’ve had your fill of long walks along the historic canals, Centraal Station with its network of trams, trains, and metros is only an 8-minute walk away.

Restaurants

In an area rich with restaurants, it’s really a matter of what you fancy. For dinner, gastro-bistro Kaagman & Kortekaas (9-minute walk), which creatively combines traditional techniques with surprising ingredients, is a must for meat-lovers. If it’s comfort food you’re after, La Perla Pizzeria (11-minute walk), is famed for its authentic wood-burning oven Pizza Margherita, and convivial vibe. Or expand your pancake horizons at Japanese Pancake World (12-minute walk), which serves 3 styles of savory okonomiyaki.

Bars

For some of the most creatively presented cocktails in town, head to craft cocktail bar Tales and spirits (5-minute walk). Café ‘t Smalle (10-minute walk) has been around since the 18th century when it was the Hoppe Distillery, and its canal-side terrace is one of the prettiest places to grab a casual beer.
