Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Asterisk

Den Texstraat 16, Amsterdam, North Holland 1017 ZA, The Netherlands See on Map

A touch of the 19th century still hovers about this family hotel, which is located on a quiet street in Centrum, but its recent refurbishment means that everything looks spick-and-span.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Only the main building has an elevator, while other rooms are located up steep Dutch stairs.

Clean and contemporary guest rooms are split between singles and twins, decorated in a color scheme inspired by the large reproductions of famous artworks on the walls − most of which can be viewed in the nearby Museum District. Amenities include a flat-screen TV, free WiFi, a laptop safe and coffee- and tea making facilities.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The old building's walls are thin, so you might hear your neighbors if they're rowdy.

Modern white-tiled bathrooms offer roomy walk-in showers and all the standard amenities.

The small but cheerful lobby features a 24-hour front desk with fresh flowers, free water, hot drinks, and snacks.

There’s a lovely lounge area to relax in, with comfy chairs, molded ceilings, and chandeliers.

Guests can enjoy a Continental buffet breakfast (not included) in an elegant breakfast room or in the small garden, weather permitting.

There’s no on-site bar, but you have plenty to choose from in the area.

Getting Around

Conveniently located on the edge of Centrum, away from the worst of the hubbub, major art museums, the Leidseplein, the Flower Market, and the Rembrandtplein are all within easy walking distance. Or hop on a tram (five lines stop nearby), which will take you to Anne Frank House, Dam Square or Centraal Station.

For dinner with friends, grab a table at Bar Fisk (10-minute walk), where Tel Aviv street market-style food and creative cocktails come together in a tight-on-space but big-on-flavor restaurant. And, for a date night, you won’t regret going to Graham’s Kitchen (11-minute walk), where a former Michelin-starred chef serves a delicious set menu in a casual setting (for a surprisingly accessible price!). Or why not try a twenty-tens take on Dutch cuisine at Restaurant Floreyn (11-minute walk)?

Café-Restaurant Venster33 (8-minute walk) is a great all-rounder with an easy atmosphere, affordable cocktails, and local craft beers. Local landmark De Duvel (10-minute walk) is popular with locals, shoppers and the stroller crowd, who come for its comfortable terrace and cozy candle-lit décor.

It’s friendly, freshly refurbished, nicely located and affordable too. A solid three-star option!
