Fodor's Expert Review Hotel UNA Venezia
Ruga Do Pozzi, Cannaregio 4173, Venice, Veneto, 30121, Italy See on Map
If you’re after a very quiet location in Venice, and more of a modern style though still with an overall Venetian look, Hotel UNA Venezia is right up your alley. Off-the-beaten-path in the mainly residential Cannaregio neighborhood, the hotel—housed in two connected 15th-century palaces— feels fresh and light, and has very friendly service to boot.
There’s complimentary afternoon tea, coffee, and snacks after 2:30pm every day, plus free Prosecco, wine, and cake every evening.
room
Guest rooms have a contemporary Venetian feel, with patterned wallpaper and carpets and liberal use of striped fabrics. All have Murano glass chandeliers and some have beamed ceilings. If you like Venice style without all the frou-frou, you'll love the rooms.
If you don't like your pillow, choose one that excites you from the Pillow Wow menu.
bathroom
Designed in neutral colors, bathrooms come with either a shower or tub.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Some of the bathrooms, especially in the Classic Rooms, are on the small side.
lobby
The historic but renovated lobby features beamed ceilings and a couple of oversized armchairs. As with most Venetian lobbies, it’s not really a place to hang out, but it gives you a sense of the mix of modern and Venetian looks you’ll find inside.
dining
There’s no restaurant for lunch or dinner, but the breakfast buffet (included with all rates) gets rave reviews.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Though the quiet location can seem remote, it’s actually only a few minutes away from buzzing Strada Nova, with many places to eat and drink, and a short walk to the Rialto. (Piazza San Marco is a bit farther away.) You can also hop on the vaporetto at Fondamente Nove (8-minute walk) to travel to and from the airport, and at Ca’ d’Oro (3-minute walk) to travel around the island.
Restaurants
Reserve in advance for a great selection of traditional dishes—especially the seafood—at Osteria La Bottega ai Promessi Sposi (3-minute walk). Cozy Osteria Ca’ d’Oro alla Vedova (3-minute walk) is known for its polpette (fried meatballs) and local vino. Charming family-run Vini da Gigio (4-minute walk) offers tasty pastas and seasonal dishes with a great wine list.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Hotel UNA Venezia has a lot of little extras not often found at Venice hotels—the free nibbles and drinks in the afternoons and evenings are a huge bonus after a long day traipsing about town. The service also bends over backwards to make guests comfortable. Though the location isn’t as central as some, it’s made up for by the peacefulness and good transportation options around this authentic sestiere.
