If friendly service and an authentic, charming atmosphere are at the top of your list, it’s hard to beat 3749 Ponte Chiodo, an intimate guesthouse tucked into a quiet street in the Cannaregio neighborhood. Enthusiastic owner Mattia will be pleased to give you suggestions for off-the-beaten-path Venetian places to visit and dine, which you can ponder while lounging in the lush secret garden.

Staying at 3749 Ponte Chiodo is like spending the night in your friend’s well-appointed home. Guest rooms are cute and cozy, done up in soothing colors; some feature traditional Venetian floors and beamed ceilings.

Bathrooms are on the small side and all have showers only, no tubs.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Though most of the bathrooms are en-suite, the Standard room has a bathroom down the hallway (though it is private).

The fragrant garden area is really the lobby, with lots of little nooks to relax in or to swap stories with other guests.

There’s no restaurant at 3749 Ponte Chiodo, but a lovely breakfast is served in the garden on nice days or otherwise inside the communal breakfast area.

If you’re a coffee lover, don’t miss the delicious cappuccino.

Getting Around

A ferry from the Ca’ d’Oro vaporetto stop (4-minute walk) will drop you off in San Marco and other locations around Venice, or hop on a traghetto from the nearby Santa Sofia stop (5-minute walk) to head directly across the canal to the Rialto. If you prefer to walk, San Marco is just over 15 minutes away.

Charming family-run Vini da Gigio (2-minute walk) offers tasty pastas and seasonal dishes with a great wine list. Cozy Osteria Ca’ d’Oro alla Vedova (3-minute walk) is known for its polpette (fried meatballs) and local vino. Reserve in advance for a great selection of traditional dishes—especially the seafood—at Osteria La Bottega ai Promessi Sposi (6-minute walk).

VinoVero (3-minute walk) has a lovely selection of wines by the glass and tasty nibbles. El Sbarlefo Cannaregio (7-minute walk) offers delicious cicchetti like the classic sarde in saor (sweet and sour sardines), plus a good choice of wines and cocktails, while petite wine bar Un Mondo di Vino (9-minute walk) is a great place to enjoy aperitivi (wine or spritz and bar snacks).

It’s tough to find an “authentic” Venice experience these days. But 3749 Ponte Chiodo may be as close as it gets. Not only is it in a peaceful, non-touristy neighborhood, but the owner truly cares about making sure guests have a wonderful experience in his beloved hometown. And you will.
