Fodor's Expert Review Residenza Cellini

Via Modena 5, Rome, Latium, 00184, Italy See on Map

Fresh flowers in the foyer and personal attention from the staff help make this small, family-run residence close to Termini station feel like a gracious home. The lobby's glossy floors, elegant door moldings, and handsome wood Empire-style desk and chairs make a sweet impression. There are only six rooms, each of which is traditionally furnished—accentuated with fine draperies, warm wooden parquet floors, and authentic decorative stucco ceilings. Termini station and its transportation links are close by. Rooms in January and February have deeply discounted rates.

A small outdoor terrace is a relaxing place to unwind for the night.

room

Each room is lovingly decorated with antique rugs, landscape pictures, oak furniture, and floral bedding and curtains. Cozy king-size mattresses are hypoallergenic and orthopedic. The high ceilings have beautiful detailing. Gorgeous wood floors keep rooms cool in the summertime. All include free WiFi, air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar and coffee and tea service.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms don't have great sound insulation, so bring earplugs if this is an issue for you.

bathroom

Bathrooms are a decent size and kept clean throughout. Basic soap and shampoo is included but if you prefer fancier toiletries, pack your own. Wall hairdryers are in each bathroom. Deluxe rooms and suites have a Jacuzzi bathtub or hydro-jet shower.

lobby

The entrance to the hotel is on the 3rd floor of the palazzo. Even though there are only a handful of rooms, the hotel has a lovely small lobby done out in marble flooring and a large oak desk. Room keys are stored behind the desk when you go out for the day. The concierge is available 24 hours a day.

dining

The breakfast room is in the same style of the rooms with floral detailing, chevron wood floors and pastel walls. The buffet includes excellent tea and coffee with fresh pastries served up daily.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The hotel is super central to all of Rome's best offerings. Many of the best historic sights are reachable on foot. The Repubblica Metro Station is a 2-minute walk away where you can further access the city. And Termini Station is only a 10-minute walk away for easy trips outside of the city.

Restaurants

Big parties will love the boats at Zen Sushi (11-minute drive), perfect for sharing. Il Sorpasso (14-minute drive) has an amazing outdoor seating for an early evening dinner. Dishes are made with fresh local ingredients.

Bars

Cul de Sac (12-minute drive) knows their wines. You can spend anywhere from a couple of euros to a small bill for a glass of red. The owners work hard to stay up to date to stock the best bottles from around the country. Bar Necci (16-minute drive) was once the regular hangout of Pier Paolo Pasolini. Today it’s a popular aperitivo bar. Stick to drinks, as the food is not as amazing as the scene.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The hotel is located in a super-central area that makes exploring the city extremely easy. Rooms are classically decorated, and while furnishings are not the most up-to-date, the overall decor is elegant. There are special details throughout the hotel like antique pictures and fresh flowers. And a covered terrace on the 5th floor is another added benefit. The staff here go out of their way to make guests feel welcome, which has attracted their loyal following of repeat customers.
