The aperitivo, or prelunch or predinner drink, is available everywhere in Italy, but it is a big part of Milanese life and a must-try. Milan bar owners have enriched the usual nibbles of olives, nuts, and chips with full finger (and often fork) buffets serving cubes of pizza and cheese, fried vegetables, rice salad, sushi, and even pasta, and they’ve baptized it "Appy Hour" (with the first "h" dropped and the second one pronounced). For the price of a drink (around €8), you can make a meal of hors d'oeuvres—but don't be greedy.
This foodie paradise near the Duomo has an enormous deli featuring Italian specialty foods, as well as a refined bar, restaurant, and café that serves up traditional—and excellent—pastas, pizza slices, olives, toasted nuts, and a good selection of wines by the glass.
Open throughout the day, this is a great place to get coffee and bump into Milan's elite. Park yourself in the pretty glass-walled "greenhouse" room for some prime indoor and outdoor people-watching, or take a seat at the marble bar inside for a cocktail or bite to eat.
