Relais Villa l'Olmo

Via Imprunetana per Tavarnuzze 19, Impruneta, Florence, Tuscany 50023, Italy

Paul Feinstein

Traversing about 15-20 minutes south of the city, you’ll come upon the town of Impruneta, home to the craftsmen who make the famous terra cotta roofs of ancient Florentine buildings. Just outside the quaint and quiet town is Villa L’Olmo, a food and wine resort where guests come to relax, eat, drink, and soak up the Tuscan countryside. This 500-year-old villa is known worldwide for its incredible olive oil and wine, and it’s the perfect place to come when you want to have an authentic Italian experience away from the masses of inner-city Florence.

The villa has a special relationship with the local private golf resorts. Bring your clubs and you could be missing putts on some of the best courses in the region.

The rooms are spread around the property and vary between fully equipped apartments with kitchens, to modernized and updated hotel rooms with all the trimmings. No matter which room you pick, you’ll have views of the Tuscan hills all around you and only the sounds of distant animals as a distraction.

If you and your loved ones want more privacy, there’s a separate villa that has its own pool.

Like the bedrooms, bathrooms come in all shapes and sizes. You will find bidets in nearly all as well as marble showers and sinks and towel heaters.

Not a traditional hotel, so there’s no traditional lobby. But the reception area features leather couches, a dusty piano, and terra cotta floors. There’s also a bar, which is perfectly located for welcoming guests on hot summer days.

You don’t have to rent a car if you stay here (though it helps). The hotel has a shuttle van that will take you into the city and back.

The pool is open from 9:30 am-6:30 pm and features epic vistas of the rolling hills below. A pool menu has a limited assortment of sandwiches and cocktails.

An indoor/outdoor restaurant is known in the region for a high-level of quality local cuisine. So much so, small tour groups often make it a lunch stop on tours of the region. All products are local including freshly made pasta, veggies grown in the garden, and of course olive oil from their own press in the back.

The villa offers private cooking classes where everything is made from scratch. That includes picking fresh vegetables right from the villa’s garden.

The full bar at reception has an all-day menu in case you want light snacks with your afternoon vino. They’ll often provide a sampling of their homemade bread and olive oil if you ask nicely.

Ask the villa about their wine experience. Inside, you’ll get to make your own wine at their wine lab.

Getting Around

You’ll probably want to rent a car if you stay here. The villa is outside of the city center and most things are at least 15-20 minutes away. There is a bus that can truck you around, but be aware that it stops running at 8pm.

Inside the Bella Vista Hotel in Impruneta is the classy and elegant Bellavista Ristorante (5-minute walk) which serves authentic Tuscan cuisine.

Bar Italia (5-minute walk) is a local spot in Impruneta that serves up a good spritz and solid wines.

Sometimes you just need to get away from the city and experience the countryside in rustic style. This Villa is perfect for those times. The property has a lot going for it with an insanely good food and beverage program, a relaxing pool, and endless views of the Tuscan hills all around. For privacy-minded guests, there are hidden nooks to hide away in and for families, there are endless places to prowl. Wine and olive oil connoisseurs will find lots to love as the Diadema branded products are award-winning.
