Fodor's Expert Review Hotel degli Orafi
Lungarno Archibusieri 4, Florence, Tuscany 50121, Italy See on Map
Made famous from the 1985 movie Room with a View, this boutique property sits just across from the Arno River and does, in fact, boast stunning vistas of the waterway. While the actual room from the movie is a treat, the rest of the hotel is also charming with a stunning rooftop, ancient frescoes, and a history that dates back to the 12th Century.
A small and simple touch, the hotel gives its guests branded T-shirts – perfect for morning runs along the river.
room
Rooms are decorated in simple Florentine style with floral patterns, green carpets (some with parquet floors), and tasteful furnishings. Rooms on the 4th floor have partial river views and suites are replete with in-room tablets that act as a digital concierge for reservations or tickets. You can also connect your Netflix account.
If you want the Room with a View, you should book well in advance as it sells out quickly. Although the room is small, the terrace is one of the most romantic spots in Florence.
bathroom
All marble bathrooms come with bidets, towel warmers, and shower/tub combos (though some are shower only). Dr. Vranjes products are typical.
lobby
You can see a lot of the building’s history inside the small lobby as you’ll spy original brick and vaulted ceilings to go with the red felt chairs and couches.
If you explore the hotel, you’ll also discover small lounges throughout in addition to a reading library that has a fresco from the 12th Century.
dining
The rooftop terrace has a great bar and small restaurant where you can order simple Tuscan dishes for lunch and dinner. Make it a point of eating breakfast here though – not only is it free for all guests, you’ll be sitting under one of the most magnificent frescoed ceilings of any hotel in the city.
drinking
The spectacular rooftop terrace is the perfect spot for before or after dinner drinks. The views of the city, including the Duomo and the river are pretty unparalleled.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The location of the hotel is one of its highlights. It’s right on top of the river, which makes it easy to walk to the south side of the city along with all major sites and attractions which are right nearby. Don’t bother renting a car as dozens of restaurants, bars, shopping areas, and more are minutes away by foot.
Restaurants
Just past the Ponte Vecchio is Caffé dell’Oro (3-minute walk), a Michelin rated restaurant with classic Tuscan fare. Next door to the hotel is Ristorante Ora d’Aria (1-minute walk), a one-star Michelin spot with unique takes on Italian food.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The hotel’s location is really ideal as you have the river right outside the front door and the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio about a minute away. Everything else in the city center is also nearby making the hotel ideal for those who like to walk – but not too much. Inside, the rooftop terrace is a true gem as are the welcoming and helpful staff who greet all guests with a drink upon arrival. And if you want the most famous room in Florence, make sure to book ahead for any romantic getaways – it’s worth it.
