Dublin Skylon Hotel

Dublin Skylon Hotel, Upper Drumcondra Rd., Drumcondra, Dublin, Co. Dublin, Dublin 9, Ireland

You'll pass the Skylon on the way into town if you take the bus from the airport, and that's a major selling point for the hotel: the airport is just over ten minutes away by car (there's free on-site parking), or about twice that on the bus, and it's also a quick hop into the main attractions of Dublin too, in the other direction. Plus rooms are large and bright, staff are very welcoming, and the communal areas are actually quite stylish affairs, all rich velvets and hardwood floors.

The hotel is in historic Drumcondra neighborhood - once occupied by James Joyce, the area is worth a look around in its own right, particularly for the lovely Botanic Gardens.

Rooms are spacious, and you can get a twin or double. Tones are rich - purples, reds - with crisp white linens and comfortable Respa beds.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There's no air-conditioning, which it would be reasonable to expect in a modern hotel of this quality.

Lots of the bathrooms have a bath and a shower - some just have a shower - which is unusual in Dublin, and worth asking for when you book.

The lobby is all modern wood panelling, funky lighting and a soothing hillscape behind reception.

The attractive Skylon Bar and Grill serves a good breakfast, light lunches and a tasty if safe dinner menu. There's afternoon tea too.

There are booths and a veranda, 20s-style lighting and a wooden bar, plus a gin gallery, Irish craft beers and a veranda. In short, we like.

Getting Around

The hotel isn't at the heart of everything, but it's a more stylish choice than the airport hotels nearby, and well-located for early flights. Similarly, it's easy to get into town as well, either by car or bus. The keen could even walk - it's only about 45 minutes.

Restaurant 104 (2-minute walk) is a nice local brasserie with historical pedigree, located as it is in what was once one of the Youkstetter Pork Butcher shops mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses. Or Il Corvo (3-minute walk) is a reasonable Italian restaurant.

The Ivy House (1-minute walk), across the road, is a good option for Irish hospitality and reasonable food nearby. Or Fagan's Bar and Restaurant (8-minute walk) is an attractive Victorian drinking oasis.

A friendly welcome is one of Skylon's main selling points, alongside its good breakfast, funky bar, large rooms and sense of style. Plus, it's easy for the airport and Croke Park stadium, and still very simple by public transport or car into the city center too.
