Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Medosz

District V, Jókai tér 9, Budapest, Budapest, 1061, Hungary

This unfortunate-looking cement-block building has a fortunate location: a small square just off famous Andrássy út, within easy walking distance of the Opera House, Budapest's theater district, and the Oktogon underground stop. Inside, its former Soviet-era-institutional trappings have been replaced by friendly, restrained modern furniture. The good-humored front desk service and low prices make the Medosz an attractive budget option.

room

Rooms are modern but perhaps a little bland, with some bright colors livening things up a bit. Some have balconies or even terraces, with lovely rooftop outlooks.

For families or small groups on a budget who don't mind sharing, the 'comfort' rooms can sleep 3 or 4 for less than €100.

bathroom

Bathrooms are clean and not tiny, and there's a mix of showers and showers over baths, which can be a bit tricky to get in and out of for older guests.

lobby

The large, beige lobby is fairly uninspiring, but the staff behind the front desk are cheerful enough.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms are split into different blocks, and not all can be accessed without using some stairs. Ask if this is an issue for you.

dining

The hotel breakfast is a pretty decent continental-style buffet, served 7-10 am.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Most of the attractions of Pest are within walking distance, and for sightseeing in Buda and around the river, it's a slightly longer walk (around 30 minutes) or a speedy, and often picturesque, metro trip on Europe's oldest electrified subway system.

Restaurants

Menza (2-minute walk), a quirky Hungarian restaurant, is very nearby. Or Pizzica (2-minute walk) is a well-regarded pizza restaurant. You're spoilt for choice within a very quick stroll in this district!

Bars

The same is true for bars: there are a lot of options around here. Cactus Juice Gastro Pub, Bar and Cafe (1-minute walk) is a cool, brightly decorated pub with wooden beams and music nights that is effectively next door. Or hunt down The Rabbit Hole Bar and Cafe (4-minute walk), a slightly hidden but very atmospheric cocktail bar and pub, with friendly staff and patrons.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Great prices and a good location in a buzzing part of the city center tick our boxes, as long as you can get beyond judging a book (hotel) by its cover (ugly exterior).
