Fodor's Expert Review Carlton Hotel Budapest

District I, Apor Péter utca 3, Budapest, Budapest, 1011, Hungary See on Map

The Carlton is proof that you can stay in the Castle Hill district—even nestled at the foot of the hill itself—without paying a fortune (although don't expect too much). Rooms on the upper floors offer lovely views over rooftops to Castle Hill. With downtown just a walk across the Chain Bridge away and the Castle Hill district rising in your backyard, it's hard to do better for location and price than this little hotel on an unassuming side street, even if the property itself is a little unremarkable.

Rooms have wooden floors and twins or double beds. There are brown and gold tones, and a slightly old-fashioned feel, but around half have balconies - some of which have views (if you lean a bit) - which is pleasant.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms are pretty small, even by European standards.

The cream and white bathrooms are very clean, with shampoo dispensers rather than bottles--better for the environment, perhaps, but not particularly luxurious. Roughly half have showers, half baths.

The busy lobby with frosted glass and wood columns is not big, but the staff--at first a little suspicious--warm up to become positively kindly with guests.

There are steps up to the hotel, but guests can also take the lift from the garage.

The decent hotel breakfast is always included in the room rate, which is not always the norm in Budapest.

The hotel's little bar has something of 1990s Italy about it--black stool chairs pulled up to the bar, a satin-covered bar frontage, and purple walls. It's a little dark in the day, but better by night.

There's drinking water and a kettle in the rooms, but the bar also serves free coffee for guests, and cakes.

Getting Around

Perfectly located for the sights of Buda, the hotel is also pretty close to Pest thanks to its location close to the famous Chain Bridge. Buses or trams also run near the property.

Find good, low-key and affordable Hungarian food at Ildikó Konyhája (1-minute walk). Or there are great views accompanied by great steaks at Meat Boutique (5-minute walk).

Right by the Chain Bridge, Lánchíd Söröző (3-minute walk) pub has a great, local, retro feel, red checked tablecloths and all (we are suckers for checked tablecloths). Or hit up some craft beer at Craft Beer Hunyadi (3-minute walk).

An affordable option for those who want to be in the shadow of the castle, the Carlton Hotel is a decent hotel in Buda with kindly staff and some cute balconies, without too many other frills.
