Fodor's Expert Review Motel One München-Sendlinger Tor

Herzog-Wilhelm-Str. 28, Munich, Bavaria, 80331, Germany, Munich, Germany See on Map

Anyone expecting a cookie-cutter brand hotel, think again: the Motel One chain has jumped ahead of the game with its simple but cool concept catering to young trendy types. Boisterous furniture and offbeat colors even give the place a slightly edgy feel. The service is terrific and there are no hidden costs. This location is one of nine throughout Munich (there are more across Germany, plus a few farther afield) and they are a great option for the price. Pets (one per room), parking, and breakfast cost extra. The location, near Sendlinger Tor on a leafy, business-like square, is perfect for the historic Altstadt.

room

Rooms are nicely decked out, with grey walls turquoise throws and big, comfortable beds. Some have balconies with deck chairs.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Rooms are not large, so while children under 12 can stay for free in their parents' room, it might feel cramped (even couples might feel a little cramped - but for this price in this location, who cares?).

bathroom

Bathrooms are clean, with great water pressure in the showers, and organic products.

lobby

The lobby is buzzy and individual-feeling, with blue velvet butterfly chairs, an aquarium and space-age copper lamps. Staff are fantastic.

Like the decor? It's inspired by a modern-take on the lavish vibe of Ludwig II's palaces, apparently - the king of Bavaria in the 1800s, who was also known as the 'Fairy Tale King'.

dining

The organic, hipster-style breakfast is good.

drinking

Drinks and snacks are available at the cool One Lounge bar, which continues the swanky feel of Ludwig's palace (chandeliers ago-go) and in summer there's a garden terrace area with jaunty turquoise deckchairs.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The hotel's location is good: just out of the historic city center, it's a short, pleasant walk to the sights.

Restaurants

Try some high-end Bavarian food at Restaurant Pfistermühle (15-minute walk) in a 16th-century mill. Or there's tasty classic Mediterranean food on offer at the nearby Punto diVino (2-minute walk), a simple Italian.

Bars

Kennedy's Bar and Restaurant (1-minute walk) is a lively Irish pub right by the hotel. Or head into the historic heart of the city for one of Munich's famous bierkellers - probably the most famous is Hofbräuhaus (15-minute walk).

WHY WE LIKE IT

Just because somewhere is good value for money, that doesn't need to mean bad service, boring decor, or poor bathrooms, and the Motel One München-Sendlinger Tor is a prime example of going above and beyond the basic expectations of chain hotels. Cool, bright, and considerably better than average, it's a brilliant choice in the center of town for budget-conscious travellers with a sense of style.
