Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Zur Post Garni-Andechs
Starnberger Str. 2, Andechs, Bavaria, 82346, Germany, Munich, Germany See on Map
Not far from the Andechs Monastery, everything about this B&B is Bavarian country style, clean and functional, with solid-pine furnishings. There's a butcher shop with local wild venison, and even a Trachten store with modern takes on traditional clothing. A delicious breakfast buffet will prepare you for a long day of touring, and the large garden is lovely for relaxing in on your return. There's free parking.
If you're lucky, you'll get a view of the deer grazing nearby, completing the countryside feel (probably not a great idea to look at how cute they are directly before buying some delicious venison in the butcher shop...)
room
There's a range of types of room, from singles right up to a suite and studio, but all are roomy, comfortable and welcoming, continuing the pine look and the hunting decor.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Vegetarians be warned: the hotel's hunting heritage is proudly displayed, including mounted animal heads on the walls, etc.
bathroom
Bathrooms are generally of a reasonable size, and spotlessly clean.
lobby
The lobby boasts a cute wooden 'Rezeption' desk (often manned by cheery staff in traditional Bavarian costume--not all speak English, but most do, and you will be understood).
dining
There's no on-site restaurant but the hotel's breakfasts are delicious, a huge, hearty homemade spread with everything from cakes to meats.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel's selling point is its proximity to the monastery, and it's well-located for touring further afield in Bavaria, too. It's only an hour or so from Munich. But it's best to have a car to get around, as the nearby lakeside town of Herrsching is a quick drive and boasts a lot more to do than little Andechs.
Restaurants
The famous Andechs monastery has a relaxed pilgrim's tavern, Andechser Bräustüberl (12-minute walk, 2-minute drive)--bring your own food or choose from their local specialties, with a great view of the Bavarian Alps from the terrace. Or if you need a break from all the Bavarian vibes, Seaside Sushi Sake (6-minute drive, in Herrsching) is a welcome departure, and the sushi is good and fresh.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Ticks the Bavaria box, with bells on. Lots of tradition, a lovely location near the monastery, and a great garden, plus the breakfast is stellar. The only caveat is that it is a little more pricey than some other options in the area, but then it is a stand-out B&B.
