Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Uhland

Uhlandstr. 1, Munich, Bavaria, 80336, Germany See on Map Fodor's Choice

This stately art nouveau villa, a landmark building, houses pleasant rooms that can accommodate up to three people. The owner and host was born here and knows just how to make guests feel at home too. She and her staff welcome all questions and seem to love answering them. The breakfast buffet is good and the location is reasonable as well, just out of the city center (it's around 20 minutes on foot to Marienplatz) and within walking distance of the Oktoberfest grounds.

Rooms are comfortable and reasonably sized, if not up-to-the-minute stylish. Some have beams and antique furniture, while others have a slightly more bland, pine feel.

Try the waterbed suite - an unusual option.

Bathrooms are clean and mainly in white tiles (although some have a more old-fashioned floral vibe), and most are not large--some have sloping ceilings.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There's no air-conditioning.

This little hotel is all about the friendly family welcome, rather than the swanky lobby.

There are some cute added touches here: dogs are welcome, for example, and there's coffee and tea available all day.

The spacious, inviting breakfast room filled with light and the excellent food will get you ready for the day ahead.

Getting Around

Close to Munich's main station and Oktoberfest, the hotel is still only a short walk to the city center, too. There are public transport options nearby as well.

Don't be put off by the basic looks: Tengri Tagh Uyghur (11-minute walk) is a stellar place to try Chinese Uighur food, and the friendly owner will recommend something if you aren't familiar with the cuisine. Or - rather more traditionally - there are Bavarian classics on offer at the quaint Münchner Stubn (10-minute walk).

In summer, hop on the U-bahn and head for the huge, jolly beer garden at the Chinesischer Turm (28-minute U-bahn) in the Englischer Garten. Or try cocktails at the refined Bar Gabanyi (6-minute walk).

We're a sucker for a pretty building, and the Hotel Uhland is certainly a looker (from the outside at least). Throw in the friendly welcome, good prices, and a pretty decent location, particularly if you're in town for Oktoberfest, and it's a winner.
