Fodor's Expert Review Hotel am Starnberger See

This small hotel next to the train station, and right by the lake and picturesque shoreside promenade, has several rooms with a lake view - and that's what it's all about in Starnberg. Rooms are simply done, with light colors and lake prints on the walls. There are several sister restaurants, not all physically attached to the hotel.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There are some busy roads nearby, and not all of the architecture surrounding the hotel matches the beauty of the lake. But keep your eyes fixed on the sparkling blue water and you'll be ok...

Rooms are reasonably sized if not remarkable in terms of their decor, with old-fashioned blue spotted carpets and wooden beds, and come in a variety of sizes. The lake-view rooms are the nicest, with balconies.

Bathrooms can look a little tired, but are clean and functional.

The hotel has three dining options, and guests can book half-board with meals at the traditional Bavarian Wirtshaus Starnberg in Tutzinger Hof, nearby. There's also sushi on offer at the attached Fisherman's Sushi & Bar, or decent Italian food at Al Gallo Nero. Breakfast is a lush spread, served on-site.

Make sure not to miss the Bavarian food at the Wirtshaus - it's the best in town.
