Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Amba

Arnulfstr. 20, Munich, Bavaria, 80335, Germany, Munich, Germany See on Map

Right across the street from the main train station, Amba embodies the "cheap and cheerful" concept, with clean, bright rooms, good service, a solid breakfast, and no expensive thrills. The location - practical rather than beautiful - means you can hit the nearby sights on foot or use the public transportation options a few yards away. There are also occasional special deals on weekends.

room

Rooms are quite basic, but there are some thoughtful elements - for example, micro-fiber mattresses with covers to help allergy-sufferers. There are three and four-bed rooms for families or groups.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There can be some noise and some rooms feel a little tired and hostel-like, with very little in terms of extra amenities - toiletries, air-con, a fridge, etc.

bathroom

Bathrooms are tiny and a little worn, with showers, in white, brown and peach tiles. There's a hairdryer provided.

lobby

The buzzing lobby, full of students and groups, has a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere of wicker sofas with brightly-colored upholstery.

gym

There's a small exercise room.

dining

The breakfast buffet is solid, with sparkling wine to boot.

drinking

The cheery lobby with its constant bustle is actually a fairly lively spot for a quick drink before heading out of an evening.

Guests get a free coffee-to-go when they leave the hotel for sightseeing or business meetings.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The hotel is close enough to the Old Town to walk, but its location almost on top of the main train station also means the public transport is very easy.

Restaurants

Head to Augustiner-Keller (6-minute walk) for some hearty, traditional Bavarian food and drink. Or if you are in the mood for a pizza, nearby Ristorante Ca'd'oro (5-minute walk) is not a bad option.

Bars

Beer and sausage - and that's basically it - means Bufet (2-minute walk) plays admirably to Munich's strengths. We like. Or Ella (12-minute walk) is a stylish bar and restaurant in the new wing of the Lenbachhaus Museum, perfect for an artsy tipple before or after you hit the museum.

WHY WE LIKE IT

No frills, no fuss: if you're on a budget but still keen to stay centrally, you can do worse than Amba, particularly if you are travelling in a group. Chances of meeting like-minded students or youths from across the globe are high.
