Fodor's Expert Review Hotel am Markt

If you're looking for a hotel right in the heart of the historic action, with simple rooms and fair prices, Hotel am Markt is hard to beat. In a charming old building next to the Viktualienmarkt, the hotel is welcoming and pleasant, if a little sparse in terms of facilities and extras. But the point here is not to sit in your room - get out there and see the beautiful city center of Munich, right on your doorstep.

Rooms are not over large, but simple and comfortable enough, in beige with wood panels. They can get hot in summer, and opening the windows lets in street noise (the inevitable downside of the enviable location). Cots or an extra bed can be accommodated for a small charge.

Bathrooms are white and spotlessly clean, with showers.

The tiled modern lobby, with a black and white picture of Munich behind reception, is manned by helpful staff.

There's a restaurant connected to the hotel downstairs, which is decent.

Breakfast is good, but a little pricey, and there are many alternatives nearby - try a pretzel from the Viktualienmarkt stalls if you want to feel properly Bavarian.

Guests can get a drink at the hotel, but in this plum area, why stay in? There are bars aplenty, some of Munich's best, within minutes.
