If you're looking for a hotel right in the heart of the historic action, with simple rooms and fair prices, Hotel am Markt is hard to beat. In a charming old building next to the Viktualienmarkt, the hotel is welcoming and pleasant, if a little sparse in terms of facilities and extras. But the point here is not to sit in your room - get out there and see the beautiful city center of Munich, right on your doorstep.
Rooms are not over large, but simple and comfortable enough, in beige with wood panels. They can get hot in summer, and opening the windows lets in street noise (the inevitable downside of the enviable location). Cots or an extra bed can be accommodated for a small charge.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Not all rooms have safes.
Bathrooms are white and spotlessly clean, with showers.
The tiled modern lobby, with a black and white picture of Munich behind reception, is manned by helpful staff.
There's a restaurant connected to the hotel downstairs, which is decent.
Breakfast is good, but a little pricey, and there are many alternatives nearby - try a pretzel from the Viktualienmarkt stalls if you want to feel properly Bavarian.
Guests can get a drink at the hotel, but in this plum area, why stay in? There are bars aplenty, some of Munich's best, within minutes.
The hotel is enviably placed in Munich's historic Aldstadt, but is also well connected by S-bahn to the airport.
Blauer Bock (4-minute walk)offers regional specialities in a sleek, modern environment. Or try EMIKO (1-minute walk) - the stylish Japanese restaurant at the top of LOUIS hotel has stunning food and a pleasant rooftop terrace in summer.
Trendy little Garcon (3-minute walk) is a nice spot for a laidback drink. Or for the full Bavarian hog, the famous Hofbräuhaus München beer hall (4-minute walk) is close by.
WHY WE LIKE IT
A reasonably priced hotel in the center of expensive Munich? We're in. Plus the Hotel Am Markt throws in some historic charm, simple but cosy rooms, and a generally professional, well-run vibe. Not bad at all for a cost-conscious city-break.
